Healthy Grocery Shopping Checklist

Going to the grocery store can be one of the most dreadful tasks, especially if you don’t really have a game plan for what you plan to buy

If I add up all the time I’ve spent wandering the aisles of a grocery store it would probably equate to three years of my life.

Part of that has to do with the fact that my dad owns a grocery store, so I spent a good portion of my childhood running up and down the aisles being chased by my big brother and getting yelled at by my dad for knocking over cereal box displays. The other part is probably because I never used to go grocery shopping with a list of things I actually needed, so I would walk up and down every aisle putting things in my cart that I would end up throwing away. I would also get extremely distracted by the end displays – especially around the holidays. Valentine heart shaped marshmallows? Need them.  St. Patrick’s Day green shamrock Ritz crackers? Well, aren’t these just the cutest! Pumpkin spice cornbread? ABSOLUTELY! Santa Clause shaped Macaroni and Cheese?! Who could say no to that?!

I’ve also learned over the years to NEVER and I mean NEVER go grocery shopping when you’re hungry, because that’s just setting yourself up for a disaster. Chances are you’ll black out and end up with chips and guacamole, that carrot cake made fresh in the deli, or “hot and ready” pizza. Been there, done that. From experience, the best time to shop for groceries is after you just ate a big meal!

I think you get the point. I used to suck at grocery shopping, and I mean suck. I was wasting a ton of money and coming home with things I didn’t need, which resulted in me either eating unhealthy things or throwing them away. The only way to learn from your mistakes is to make mistakes, (does that even make sense?) I’m not sure, but I think you get what I’m trying to say.

I learned from my mistakes and came up with this Healthy Grocery Shopping List! These are all of the foods I get weekly/bi-weekly when shopping. This list includes some of my go-to favorite items to have stocked on my shelves.
